A patchwork of regions of differing lung attenuation, may represent:
- Patchy interstitial disease
- Obliterative small airway disease, or
- Occlusive vascular disease
Causes
- Mosaic perfusion
- Small airways disease (90-95%)
- Vascular disease
- Ground glass opacity (GGO)
Mosaic perfusion
- Geographic areas of abnormal lucent lung due to decreased perfusion
- 50% of lung attenuation is derived from blood flow
- Lucent lung is abnormal
Causes
- Airways disease (90-95%)
- Small airway obstruction (Air trapping) → ↓ ventilation → Hypoxia → Reflex vasoconstriction → ↓ blood flow → Lucent lung
- Vascular disease
- Small vessel occlusion (vascular stenosis/obstruction) → ↓ blood flow → Lucent lung
